The Catholic Bishops in GHana have re-enforced their stance aganist LGBTQ activities in Ghana. They have affirmed their support for the passage of the anti-LGBTQ bill before parliament. According to them, the bill if passed will ensure that persons found to enagage in LGBTQ activities are prosecuted according to the law.
This was contained in a communique dated Monday, December 11, 2023 issued by the Bishops. It was signed by the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi.
It was on the theme “The Catholic Church and the State on Homosexuality”.
The Bishops explained that marriage between homosexuals was not in the interest of Ghana as it would affect the size of the population in the long run and as such lawmakers were within their rights to enact laws against homosexuality.
“We can say that while it is not right to criminalize homosexuals just for being homosexuals, the State is within its right to criminalise the acts of homosexuals in the interest of the nation,” they stated.
Teachings
The Bishops explained that the Catholic Church’s teaching on homosexuality was based primarily on the Bible.
The Bible, which was the foundation of Christian beliefs and practices, condemned the practice of homosexuality.
