Ghanaian Gay Couple fear for their lives

At a time when the LGBTQ community face resistance from the christian fraternity nation wide, there is little or no hope if there will come a time when the clergy will make way for same sex marriage to be blessed.

Two Ghanaian gay couple whose anonimity has been withheld for security reasons shared their experiences with journalists during the early weeks of January 20224.

The couple have concealed their sexual identities under the pretense that they are sisters in the Catholic Church in GHana for fear of discrimination and possibly apprehension.

"We are not safe," said 27-year-old Kay, a lesbian woman who spoke to Reuters in the capital Accra on condition that her and her partner's real names were not used. Their precarious situation has not been helped by a landmark ruling in December, approved by Pope Francis, to allow Roman Catholic priests to administer blessings to same-sex couples. The move, which has met particularly strong resistance and in some cases rejection from African bishops, has fuelled resentment rather than acceptance of the gay community among Catholics in Ghana, Kay said.

Meanwhile the Catholic bishops in Ghana have issued a statement stating that they disagree with the Pope's position on LGBTQ matters.
